A tiger mauled its handler at\u00a0a popular amusement park on the Gold\u00a0Coast in Australia, leaving the experienced worker hospitalized with \u201cserious lacerations and puncture wounds\u201d to her arm. <\/p>\n
The unnamed handler, 47, was working with one of\u00a0Dreamworld\u2019s\u00a0nine tigers when, according to the Queensland Ambulance Service,\u00a0she was attacked shortly before 9 a.m.\u00a0Monday\u00a0local time. <\/p>\n
Park staff were able to restrain the tiger before paramedics arrived. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe patient obviously had received some serious lacerations and puncture wounds from the animal,\u201d\u00a0Queensland Ambulance Service\u00a0acting district director Justin Payne told reporters. <\/p>\n
\u201cThankfully on their arrival the bleeding had been managed very well by first aid providers there at Dreamworld, which was excellent to see,\u201d Payne said. <\/p>\n
The handler\u00a0\u201cwas quite pale and feeling unwell,\u201d but is now in a stable condition at Gold Coast University Hospital, he added. <\/p>\n
In a statement Dreamworld said Monday\u2019s attack was an \u201cisolated and rare incident\u201d and the business\u2019s \u201cimmediate focus is on the support of the team member.\u201d <\/p>\n
Dreamworld declined to answer further questions on the welfare of the tiger. <\/p>\n
The park remained open to the public on Monday. <\/p>\n
Dreamworld\u2019s Tiger Island exhibit is billed as an \u201cinteractive\u201d experience where visitors can \u201ccan get so close you could feel the breath of a tiger.\u201d <\/p>\n
The park\u2019s website advertises the opportunity for visitors to feed some of its nine Bengal and Sumatran tigers. <\/p>\n
Monday\u2019s attack in not the first time a tiger has injured staff at Dreamworld. In 2011, a 160-kilogram Bengal tiger named Keto bit two handlers in two separate incidents, according to local media reports at the time. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
