A new round of ceasefire talks\u00a0are due to\u00a0begin\u00a0Thursday<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>after\u00a0the killings of\u00a0senior figures in Hamas and the\u00a0Iranian-backed\u00a0Lebanese militant group Hezbollah upended the leadership of both organizations and\u00a0made\u00a0the negotiations appear precarious.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            The news follows an especially deadly weekend for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. At least 93 people were killed overnight\u00a0into Saturday when an\u00a0Israeli strike hit a school and mosque in the eastern part of Gaza City where displaced people were sheltering, according to local officials.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            The strike was almost universally condemned, including by some of Israel\u2019s closest allies.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\">        Fading hopes for a ceasefire<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            Israel launched its war against Hamas after the militant group\u2019s\u00a0cross-border October 7 attacks,\u00a0in\u00a0which more than 1,200 Israelis\u00a0were killed\u00a0and 250 taken hostage, according to Israeli authorities. More than 100 of those hostages remain in Gaza, their families back home pleading for a breakthrough to secure their\u00a0safe\u00a0return.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            Hopes of a hostage-for-ceasefire agreement\u00a0seemed to<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>diminish in recent weeks after Israel launched a series of strikes\u00a0against senior figures in Hamas and in Hezbollah, which has been sparring with Israel on a near-daily basis since October,\u00a0in solidarity with Hamas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            But Egyptian and Qatari mediators have conveyed to Israeli officials in recent days that Yahya Sinwar, the new head of its political bureau following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, wants a ceasefire deal, an Israeli source familiar with the matter said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            A hardliner and, according to Israel, one of the masterminds behind the deadly October 7 terror\u00a0attacks,\u00a0Sinwar\u00a0was\u00a0previously<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>believed to be dismissive of a ceasefire and hostage release deal.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            Hamas said\u00a0Sunday\u00a0it has asked mediators to implement a ceasefire plan based on previous ceasefire talks such as those put forward by US President Joe Biden and the UN Security Council in July.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            International pressure is intensifying<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>for\u00a0Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach an agreement\u00a0with Hamas.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            A drumbeat of Western criticism of Netanyahu\u2019s actions has grown louder in recent weeks, with the election of a Labour government in the United Kingdom and the\u00a0confirmation\u00a0of US Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for November\u2019s presidential election. Harris\u2019 comments on Gaza signal a shift in tone from\u00a0Biden\u2019s\u00a0steady\u00a0support of Israel.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            Harris said\u00a0Saturday\u00a0that \u201cfar too many\u201d civilians have been killed in Gaza, saying a deal \u201cneeds to get done now.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            And\u00a0Netanyahu\u00a0faces\u00a0anger from some quarters\u00a0at home. The Hostage and Missing Families Forum, a powerful voice in Israel, has\u00a0for months repeatedly\u00a0called on Israel and Hamas to finalize a hostage-and-ceasefire deal.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            \u201cA deal is the only path to bring all hostages home. Time is running out. The hostages have no more to spare. A deal must be signed now!\u201d the forum said in a statement\u00a0last week<strong>.<\/strong>    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\">        A humanitarian catastrophe<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            A ceasefire deal would provide a reprieve for\u00a0the approximately\u00a02.2\u00a0million Palestinians who have been living in nightmarish conditions in Gaza.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            Nearly everyone living in Gaza has been displaced in the conflict, with many people forced to flee\u00a0repeatedlyas the Israeli\u00a0military\u00a0operation expanded, often into places<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>it<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>previously said had been\u00a0cleared\u00a0of Hamas\u00a0fighters.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            In\u00a0recent\u00a0days, some 75,000 people\u00a0southwest Gaza after Israeli evacuation orders\u00a0were issued, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) chief Philippe Lazzarini.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            Less than a sixth of the area of Gaza is not under Israeli evacuation orders, Lazzarini said late last\u00a0month.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            \u201cQuite often, people have just a few hours to pack whatever they can &amp; start all over again, mostly on foot or on a crowded donkey cart for those who can afford it,\u201d he said\u00a0Sunday\u00a0on the social media platform X.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            Earlier this week Fikr Shalltoot, the Gaza Director for aid group Medical Aid for Palestinians, said the impending milestone \u201cmeans that 40,000 families are grieving, and their hearts are broken.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\">            \u201cMany people are losing hope and some are losing faith, but mostly people are losing trust in the international community.
